INSTRUCTOR’S INTRODUCTION

I have known Jade since 2013 as she was the very first fitness professional I met here and her outdoor yoga classes were also my first organized fitness activities I did in Shanghai. It was impossible to not immediately like this sincere, humble, yet charismatic and dedicated individual who speaks perfect English.
Jade’s story could be described as ‘Shanghai dream come true’ and is definitely a ready to use scenario for the inspiring novel or/and movie!

Jade came to Shanghai on her own in 2005 from a small village near Guillin and as she describes it on her blog ‘wasn’t scared at all, instead was super excited because her heart wanted to be here’. She continues I had no plan about the future…as I didn’t grow up that way and no one taught me “to plan future”, all my asset was/still is pure & kind heart, a simple mind but always willing to learn more, a backpack, and a later -on- added suitcase’.

Jade has been teaching yoga since 2008 – out of ‘pure love and passion’. In 2012 she founded the Meetup outdoor yoga – Yogalover Group in Shanghai  – because as she says ‘ Just wanted to share what I love with people, especially with those who can’t afford to join any yoga studio in town’.
It is possible to see how much a person loves what he or she does because it gives them this special glow and the shimmering sparkles in their eyes when they do it or talk about it, and that was the impression Jade gave the first day I met her.

It was almost palpable, so it didn’t come as a surprise to anyone who knows her  that in 2016 she finally opened her own yoga studio as she took over the space of former Yoga Garden.
Today she offers regular yoga classes at at   tranquil grounds of 9 Clouds and her mission is to ‘build  a much better and stronger yoga community’.
CLASS INTRODUCTION

The class I attended is called ‘Energetic flow’. It is an active flowing class designed to stretch and explore every part of the body. Perfect practice for first things in the morning as you will practice inversions and backbend so it will help you speed up your digestion!  The class can be a challenge but it is refreshing and energizing. Besides that Jade also teaches Hatha yoga – check out the full schedule on FREESOULYOGA WeChat account.
MY PERSONAL IMPRESSION

First of all – the space. Located on 4th floor at 17 North Xiangyang Road, The interior created by Tai Chi  studio 9 clouds welcomes you and calms you down with its pervading tranquility. I loved the combination of bare walls with the picturesque views  on this intriguing clash of old and new architecture in Shanghai.

If you haven’t noticed yet from my introduction how much I admire Jade, then let me tell you this. Although this amazing woman made a huge progress in her career, staying humble and pure hearted as she was during our first encounter, one thing remained the same. You can feel the passion and love for yoga in the room from the moment the class starts. Jade is concerned about the wellbeing of all the members in the class and it translates into 100% frequency of the class members. You will rarely find a free mat without previous booking because she attracts both yoga newbies and veterans.

The phenomenon of Jade’s class – to me  – is that she finds the way to be both demanding teacher who encourages students to push hard, but at the same time she helps you accept the fact that you may not necessarily hone all the poses and that’s still ok. Her attitude will get you to focus on your body but her cheerful attitude will also make you laugh heartily. The mixture of these two result in the uniqueness of Jade’s classes.
One more huge asset is that Jade is perfect English and Chinese speaker and she speaks both during the class. Who would say no to some extra Chinese practice in the relaxing environment of a yoga studio?!
