LOOKING FOR PURE SERENITY IN SHANGHAI? VISIT FLOATASIAN!
Although floating is the latest addition to Shanghai SPA scene, gradually gaining foothold especially among fitness enthusiasts, it is not a new concept at all.
To begin with, floating and swimming are as old as our species and that’s how we all came to this world – out of the very private ‘floating tanks’ in our mothers’ wombs.
Whether or not this is what originally inspired the inventor of floatation therapy tank with warm Epsom Salt is not clear. However, what we can be sure of is that the man behind is John Lilly, who in 1964 provided humanity with the chance to, in a way, get back to this possibly most blissful state of mind. He was interested in meditation and in the physiology and psychology of the meditative state when he started working on the effects of sensory deprivation. He discovered that his experimental subjects, his students, enjoyed the experience of floating and reached levels of relaxation only seen in deep meditation. In fact within a few minutes a floating person can reach a depth of relaxation which takes many years to achieve by classical meditation techniques.
The ‘magical ingredient’ that lets us feel weightless is Epsom Salt. It raises the density of the water, making it easy to float, and because it has a silky feel which is very good for the skin. Epsom salt is very different from sea salt (brine) in this respect. The enclosed chamber provides a cozy space which is warm, private, quiet and dark.

FLOATING SESSION INTRODUCTION
To put it short – for 50 – 90 minutes (depending on your preference) you are separated from any outside sensors and bask in the blissful ‘Me, myself and I’ experience as your body floats in the salty water with temperature of 35 degrees Celsius.
All you need to do is take a shower (Floatasian generously provides high quality Australian products – Aesop – so you don’t need to bring anything),undress completely, locate yourself in the tank and let it go. Literally.
You don’t need to make any physical effort, just switch off from the outside world and focus on your own breath while changing the arms’ positions.
You will be provided with waterproof earplugs to add either nature sounds or mindful meditation to your session (but don’t feel forced to wear them!)
Most important – NO FOOD OR ALCOHOL OVERDOSE before the session, and NO BEVERAGES CONTAIINING CAFFEINE 4 HOURS BEFORE FLOATING.

To me, the unique experience began already before entering the floatation tank. The moment I went inside the soothing interior of Floatasian’s lounge, I felt its pacifying impact on my – almost 24/7 – ‘alert and ready for action’ mode.
The floating itself – 60 minutes of pure pure serenity. We all know more than well how mercilessly hectic the pace of this city can be. As a result, especially those whose coping mechanisms are not that highly developed, may end up feeling disconnected from their own selves, losing composure and integrity.
Although I do have my own ‘sanity saving tactics’ – regular yoga and exercise, there are those moments when I feel overexposed and then my poor gums suffer from clenching my teeth. In such cases especially, which in big city life of career oriented Shanghailanders are pretty frequent, seems like floating turns out to be the instant ‘over the counter’ remedy. Each and every minute in the tank gave me this ultra quiet ,restful sensation so at the end I got out of the ‘salty shelter’ feeling like every nerve cell of my body received balancing treatment.
